This is our most requested Myanmar motorcycle tour. The scenery and road conditions are varied and there are plenty of cool villages and small towns to explore on the way. On this trip you will meet some of the minorities of Shan state, visit some iconic places like Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake  and Kalaw that are on most of the bucket lists. You will go well off the beaten trails and drive to Mogok, Ruby town of Myanmar where only few travellers have visited.

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Mandalay

Transfer from Mandalay airport to your hotel in Mandalay. Settle in and free time to explore Mandalay. Welcome dinner, trip briefing and meet the local team tonight.

Day 2: Drive around Royal Capitals

After breakfast start your warm up day and pick up the essential survival skills for driving motorcycle in Myanmar and explore some Mandalay sights.

Across the river we visit Mingun with its massive brick Pagoda and the biggest bronze bell in the world. After Mingun we drive dusty lanes along the Irrawaddy (approx. 20km) to ancient imperial capital Ava (Inwa). Here we drive around of the beaten tracks and visit some archaeological sites and have a lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon we start heading back to Mandalay visiting Amarapura and pay visit to some of its skillful craftsmen to learn about different handmade products.

After Amarapura we drive to Ubein Bridge for a sunset refreshment before heading back to hotel.

Day 3: Mandalay to Hsipaw

Gogteik Gorge

After breakfast start your Myanmar motorcycle adventure heading north to rural part of Shan State. Drive first to hill station town and old summer capital of the British, Pyin Oo Lwin located at altitiude of 1000m. In Pyin Oo Lwin you will stop at nice waterfall, have your swimming gear ready of you fancy a dip.
Lunch in Naucho village.

Todays drive is along old Burma road connecting Mandalay to China. Although being main artery for trade and goods transport this is still fairly small and narrow road that has light traffic. You will drive through the 300m deep Gokteik Gorge where you can see the over 100years old Gokteik Bridge. Follow the rolling hills and farming lands and you will arrive to Hsipaw, one of the Shan kingdoms.
We drive up to a viewpoint for a nice sunset panorama over Dokthawaddy River and Hsipaw Town.

Day 4: Exploring Hsipaw & surroundings

Explore Hsipaw and surrounding region. You can choose the challenge either in the valley and flat easy roads and chilling or more challenging ride up mountain to visit Palaung minority villages and tea plantations. In Hsipaw you can see different home industries and visit abducted  Shan prince’s residence which has been opened partly as home museum.

Day 5: Hsipaw to Mogok


After breakfast drive to Kyuakme, a lively trading town south of Hsipaw. After Kyaukme the first part is easy driving with good road and light traffic. After 1.5 hours of driving the road changes to dusty rocky road which is the hardest part of the day. The Scenery is amazing throughout the day from river valleys to breath-taking highland views.

Mogok is situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountain ranges. Our company will arrange necessary travel permits for visiting Mogok.

Day 6: Mogok and rubies

Today is resting day from driving and we visit some points of interest in the “valley of rubies”. Mogok has been famous for its ruby and sapphire stones since ancient times. After breakfast we head to local gemstone market to learn about the different qualities of these precious stones and after if we are able to get permission we visit one of the ruby mines to observe how the precious stones are extracted from the ground with only little machinery help.

After lunch the rest of the day is for relaxing and exploring Mogok and nearby villages.

Day 7: Drive to Pyin Oo Lwin


After Early breakfast we start to head to Pyin Oo Lwin. This road is one of the most beautiful in Myanmar and in really good shape. Driving across mountain ranges with only light traffic this drive is truly astonishing. We eat lunch at a local highland village and start to descend from the highland range and the scenery changes to desert like plains.

Arrive to Pyin Oo Lwin late afternoon and check in to your hotel. After check in we can visit botanical gardens, coffee plantations or wonder around this charming hill station town, there are some magnificent colonial era buildings to admire.

Day 8: Pyin Oo Lwin to Kalaw

In morning we start our long driving day heading towards Kalaw, passing some charming farming villages and curving on the hilly roads. Make a lunch break at local village and keep heading to Kalaw. We arrive to Kalaw just before sun set. We have a possibility for relaxing sun downers at our hotel or at a local bar.

Day 9: Kalaw to Inle Lake


We start our Myanmar motorcycle “trek” to Inle Lake after breakfast at our hotel. Today is all about side tracks and small dusty roads. The track leads as through this stunning hilly region on the way visiting some minority villages and learning about the simple life of hill tribes people.

After reaching Nyaung Shwe town at Inle Lake. Time permitting you can drive to Main Thauk 15min for a visit to Myanmar’s premier wine yard, the Red Mountain Estate. This is perfect spot for wine tasting and sunset.

Day 10: Inle Lake boat excursion

Today you will explore the lake by boat. Marvel at floating farms, leg rowers and villages built on stilts. Take a smaller river running to the lake and visit the Inn Thein Pagoda complex hidden behind bamboo forest with its hundreds of crumbling stupas.

The day ends with a sunset canoe ride and cold beer or refreshing drink in your hand.

Day 11: Inle to Bagan

After early breakfast we continue our Myanmar motorcycle journey to ancient Bagan. En-route you will pass farming lands and many friendly villages. We make a lunch stop at Thazi and continue towards Bagan via Meikhtila through desert like plains of central Myanmar’s dry zone with feeling of isolation with virtually empty roads.

On arrival we have to station our motorbikes on the outskirts of the city because driving motorbikes is forbidden for foreigners in Bagan. Check in to your hotel and time permitting climb up to a pagoda and witness a magical sunset of Bagan with hundreds and hundreds of ancients Temples and Pagodas resting on its plains.

Day 12: Highlights of Bagan


Today you can explore Bagan independently if you wish. There are many possibilities from hot air balloon flights to cycling and horse cart rides. Discovery rides can help arranging an optional city tour for your exploration day should you wish.

Day 13: Motorcycle ride Bagan to Mandalay

On our last day we start heading to Mandalay via old road passing through farming villages. Driving on the roads is pleasant and there is only light traffic here.

En-route we have the possibility to do a little loop to visit Mt. Popa extinct volcano that majestically rises 1500 meters up from the surrounding plains. Mt. Popa is the most important centre for Nat spirit worshippers. From here you have a chance to admire the surrounding views before starting the last leg to Bagan.

We reach Mandalay late afternoon have an ending brief and say our farewells to all the crew members.
