Exploring Tanintharyi River Villages from Myeik

If you happen to travel to Myeik a day trip to little riverside village of Tagu and old trading hub Thanintharyi are well worth the trouble getting there.

The road leading out from Myeik has been recently improved and is in excellent condition. After an hours drive and crossing a river over bridge and taking a smaller road winding up lush green hills you will eventually reach Tagu. A little village by the Thanintharyi River.

From here we crossed the river with locals and let the pro’s do their job driving bikes in and out of the boat.

Make sure you pick up enough speed and momentum if you attempt driving through the water to soft sand on the river bank and up..

There are always some helping hands near at the time of need in case getting stuck in the river.

Don’t be fooled by the satellite map showing a road along the river to Thanintharyi. The track varies from small village road to a path between rubber plantation trees. Be prepared for approx. 30km off road riding until reaching a ”bigger” road leading river jetty where we took a ferry across to the town. The Thanintharyi or Tenasserim as it used to be called was for centuries important gateway for goods travelling to Siam (current Thailand).

Happy with driving for the day and fancy a cold beer and chilling?  There is a new hotel in just outside of town along main road staff can’t speak much English but its new and considering remoteness it is pretty well equipped hotel for westerners.

This tour is roughly 200km long and does a loop. Leave early from Myeik. If you go with guide he can arrange boat to float down river 2hrs from Tagu to Tanintharyi making swim stops along the way.
